What Do You Do With Your Guilt?
I love to speak with atheists because I was one once. I hated God because I loved my sin, so I don’t shy away from anyone who doesn’t believe in God. If not for God’s Spirit, I wouldn’t know Christ (Matthew 16:17). There but by the grace of God go we. In fact, God was pleased to reveal who Christ was to Paul, a former persecutor of Christians (Galatians 1:16). I can ask them one thing: What do they do with their guilt? Many deny even having any guilt; but in the depths of their minds, they really must know that God exists (Romans 1:20c). It breaks my heart that they don’t know Christ yet, so imagine how passionately God feels about them since we know that He doesn’t want any of them to die without Christ (2 Peter 3:9).
Does the Creation Demand a Creator?
Another thought is that the creation itself seems to declare that there is a Creator (Psalm 19:1). God’s power and His divine nature seem to demand it (Romans 1:20) so that it should be very plain to them (Romans 1:19). The creation in essence speaks about its Creator (Psalm 19:2-3), so I really believe that deep down they must look at the heavens and the earth and think about where everything came from. The creation is the effect, and God is the cause. Aristotle didn’t believe in a personal God, but he did call Him the “unmoved mover” because something must have made things go into motion; so some force had to have acted upon and create matter in the first place. Even Sir Isaac Newton in his laws of motion, particularly in the First Law, reasoned that an object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force. That force must have been God Himself, the first cause.
The Impossibility of Disproving God’s Existence
For an atheist to declare that there is no God, he or she would have to have all knowledge in all quadrants of the universe and would have to examine all things seen and unseen to declare as fact that there is no God. This is impossible to prove. Isn’t atheism a faith-based belief that takes a greater leap of faith than what a Christian holds to, which is really a different meaning of faith altogether? It is the assurance that we have what we hope in as well as the conviction of what isn’t seen (Hebrews 11:1). We can’t see a thought, but we know that thoughts exist. For the believer, it is not a hope-so but a know-so. Never shy away from trying to witness to an atheist. We are no more deserving of knowing Christ than they would be. We are not one bit better than they are. It is by God’s grace only that the Spirit of God revealed to us Who Christ is. Weren’t we once like they were? You may never get a second chance with them.
A Closing Prayer
My Great God, the Father and Creator of heaven and earth, please let me be open to speaking to those who don’t know You or Your great Son, Jesus Christ. Give me a compassionate heart to try and reach those who don’t know the Son of God and to never shy away from an opportunity to be used by You to reach the lost, for we were once as they are. I pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ.
