“Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
What Are You Waiting For?
No human eye has ever fully perceived what God has in store for those who wait patiently upon Him, and He ensures us that He will act for those who do wait for Him (Isaiah 64:4). One of the most difficult times a Christian can go through is when they are waiting on God to answer a prayer or open a door. God’s silence is not His final answer, but the time between asking and receiving can be extremely difficult; however, God’s delays don’t mean God’s denial. If God is waiting, He has very good reason. Perhaps He is waiting for the exact time that is best for us. Maybe He’s seeing how patient we’ll be in waiting, and sometimes He is saying yes, but not yet. He might even be saying no because it’s not best for us and we don’t realize He’s already said no. He might even have something better for us, but I am like you. Waiting is not one of my strengths and, indeed, is one of my weakest areas. I don’t even like waiting in the doctor’s office for an appointment. How patient am I in waiting? Not very!
Working on Patience
One way you can help your patience level is to stay in the Word of God. The psalms are great for those who wait. We have hope in God (Psalm 25:21), and we can be strong and take heart as we wait upon God (Psalm 27:14). David must have run short on patience quite often because even though God had anointed him as king, he still had to run for his life for many years from King Saul’s attempts to kill him. Do we think David ever lost patience in waiting? If you read the psalms, you can read about his impatience and his patience, but the psalmist always fell back on waiting in patience because he had a secure hope in God (Psalm 40:1; 71:1). If we are consistent in our daily Bible reading, I believe this will really help our patience to grow because we can read for ourselves just how faithful God is. He is not limited by time and space. The devil is always in a hurry, but God never is, and the results of waiting on God rather than acting on impulse are not even close to being the same.
No Shame in Waiting
We know that those who wait for God will never be put to shame (Psalm 25:3), but I am ashamed of my actions when I don’t wait. Maybe that’s the reason the psalmist said that for those who wait upon God, there will be no shame. So we can conclude that there will be shame for those who don’t wait on God. For example, God is the only one Who can open doors that no one can open (Rev. 3:8), and when I have tried to forcibly kick the door open on my own, it turned out to my shame. My impatience really shows my lack of trust in God to do what I pray for Him to do but not giving Him time to do it. Every time I get ahead of God, it turns out badly. My plans blow up in my face, but God’s timing is immaculate.
A Closing Prayer
God, my Father, please help me to learn to be more trusting in You so that I can be more patient on waiting for Your divine timing and not my human planning. I need Your help and Your wisdom and Spirit to help me wait patiently for You so that I am not put to shame, and in Jesus’ name I pray.
