Just Ask
If we only knew what God had in store for us, we might ask for something better than what we are praying for right now. Do you ever feel like life is passing you by? Why not ask God what you can do for Him? Jesus said that if you abide in Him and in His Word, you can ask whatever you want and if it’s in God’s will, then you will have it (John 15:7). The key is you must be abiding in Christ. If you’re not and you’re not in the Word of God daily and Jesus is the Word (John 1:1, 14) then you are not really abiding in Him because you can’t separate Jesus from the Word for He is the Word. If you feel like God and your life is just passing you by then ask God what you can do for Him and His kingdom. This might be found in the Bible like visiting the orphans and the widows, whether they be shut-ins or living in a nursing home (James 1:27) or in the hospital or even visiting the sick or those in prison, whether in person or by mail because if you do these things for others, it’s the same as doing it for Jesus (Matt 25:40). All you have to do is ask.
Just Seek
You don’t have to look very far for something that you can do for Christ and since Jesus is the Head of the Church, maybe you can serve somewhere in the church. How about joining the Outreach team and doing door to door and visiting members, both active and non-active. Maybe you can serve at a church summer camp or in Vacation Bible School? Maybe you can volunteer to be a substitute Sunday school teacher. Talk to your pastor or a church leader. Surely there must be something you can do. I am a pastor but I still am not above cleaning the bathrooms and scrubbing toilets. It is really easy to find a way to be of service to the church and that is the same as doing it for Christ since it is His church. You just have to ask…and to seek ways in which you can serve and you won’t feel like life’s passing you by anymore.
Just Knock
Maybe you can start your own ministry. I just jumped in to a nursing home ministry and prison ministry and had no idea what I was doing. Today, they look forward to seeing me and they just love having someone to talk with. We offer church services there on Sunday afternoons so it doesn’t keep me or others from missing church. Maybe you can start a prison ministry and find ways that you can write letters to prisoners or visit them in prison. This is what Jesus would have us do (Matt 25:39). If you feel like life’s just passing you by, why not ask God for help in showing you what you can do for Him. All you have to do is ask, or seek out things you can do or maybe you might have to start something new on your own but you have to knock for doors to be open. Ask God to open doors that you can’t (Rev 3:7-8).
A Closing Prayer
God my Father, forgive me for the many years when I was simply a pew potato and not doing anything for You. It was my own fault that I felt life was passing me by so help others find what they can do for Your kingdom and for Your glory and for the glorious name of Jesus Christ I pray.
