Deuteronomy 1:30
The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you.
What is Your Giant?
Every one of us has faced giants, or is facing them now, or will have to face them in the future. There are no exceptions. What is your giant? Is it a financial need? Is it poor health or a serious disease? Maybe it’s a relationship that’s in trouble. Whatever your giant is, God wants you to know that He is the One Who goes before you…and He Himself will fight for you. We only have to trust Him. We know that even the bad things will work out for our best (Rom 8:28) because God is sovereign over everything. It’s hard to trust Him, isn’t it? I know. I have doubts at times, too. When you face your own giants, remember what David knew. He knew that God would deliver Goliath into his hand (1 Sam 17:46) and not the five smooth stones that he carried because David came not in his own name or strength, but in the name of the Lord (1 Sam 17:45).
A Lesson from David
We’ve already read how we can be more like David. David trusted God, but he still picked up five smooth stones. This shows that God will help us slay the giants, but we have to show him that we are not helpless. Why did David pick up five smooth stones? Was it in case he missed the first time? No, it may have been that David just wanted to be prepared in the event that some of the other Philistines might attack him after he killed Goliath. There is not even a hint that David feared Goliath because his trust was in God and not in himself. He didn’t trust his own skills or the five smooth stones, but in the Lord!
Slaying the Giants
The best position for the Christian to fight from is our knees. When you pray to God and tell Him that you trust Him, you should know that God laughs at the impossible or improbable because He’s unstoppable. God created the universe, so what’s too hard for Him? The only problem might be that you and I do not trust Him enough. He loves to show Himself mighty in circumstances that stop us dead in our tracks because the greater the giant, the more He is glorified. God is in your midst. He can quiet you with His love. Your God is mighty to save (Zeph 3:17), so let Him!
A Closing Prayer
You, oh Lord God, are stronger by far than anything there is because the Creator rules the created, and I have no need to fear, for God, if You are for me, who is there that can ever be against me (Rom 8:31)? When I meet my giant, I trust You because You will go before me and fight for me. There is nothing too hard for You. Please help me learn to trust You more, for You are God and there is none like You (Psalm 89:8; Ex 15:11). I ask these things in the Lord Jesus Christ’s Name and for His glory.
Amen
